Coretta Anthony-Smith Launches Campaign for Late Senator Geraldine Thompson’s Seat
Attorney Coretta Anthony-Smith made an official announcement that she is in the race to fill the late Senator Geraldine Thompson’s Florida State Senate seat, which consists of parts of Orange County.
“Let me be clear — Senator Geraldine Thompson is a tough act to follow,” Anthony-Smith said. “She was one of the greats. She was a servant throughout her entire career. Our community loved her dearly and will never forget the work she has done for us.”
Anthony-Smith says she is up for the challenge to fight for the issues that residents of District 15 deserve. “In this race, we have to tune out the drama and the distractions and focus on the issues,” she said.
Anthony-Smith added, “Pine Hills, Washington Shores, Historic Parramore, Winter Garden, Ocoee, Gotha, parts of Oakland, the Dr. Phillips area, Historic Eatonville and Apopka residents are struggling to get the kind of public safety, affordable housing and affordable insurance that residents need to live comfortably. That’s what we need to focus on.”
Coretta Anthony-Smith, a native Floridian, faced profound loss early in life. At just 7 years old, she lost her mother to a drunken driver. When she was a 16-year-old, she lost her father to cancer. Raised by her grandmother, Coretta learned the importance of standing up for what you believe in — even when the odds seem insurmountable.
Driven by her passion for justice and service, Coretta graduated from Georgetown University and the University of Florida Levin College of Law. She launched her legal career at esteemed firms across Florida before establishing her own practice in Orlando in 2007. Over the years, she has earned respect for championing the rights of others and being a trusted advisor.
Coretta Anthony-Smith, her husband Mert, and their children call Senate District 15 home. She says her deep understanding of the community’s needs inspires her determination to represent those needs in Tallahassee, where she is ready to fight for everyone. Her campaign says it is about listening, showing up, and putting in the effort to make a difference.
There will be a Democratic primary in this special election for this Central Florida State Senate seat on June 24th. Democrats running in the District 15 race include Coretta Anthony-Smith, Randolph Bracy, LaVon Bracy Davis and Alan Grayson, who all qualified. The winner will face Willie Montague, who was the only Republican to qualify, on September 2nd for the special election.
